Empowering Women in Construction with AI

ConstructConnect News | Operating Insights | Culture

Every March, Women in Construction Week highlights women making a difference in this male-dominated field. According to the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), women now make up 14% of the construction workforce, up from 10.9% just five years ago. The industry is changing for the better. In addition to seeing more women join the field, technology like artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the game. It’s an exciting time to be part of construction!

That’s why we’re celebrating the hard work of women in this field and showing how AI tools like Takeoff Boost™ are helping them build a stronger industry.

Women Are Innovating the Industry

Women are making a difference in many roles across the industry. They are not only working as contractors and estimators, but also as administrators, project managers, and key players in construction technology.

Katie Pickard, Vice President of Training and PreSales at ConstructConnect® who also serves on the National Education Committee of the American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE), highlights this impact:

“The work we do has a lasting impact everywhere you look—every skyscraper, stadium, home, or theater had an estimator involved somewhere along the way.”

Her words remind us just how impactful women are in shaping the places we live and work.

Words of Wisdom from Women in Construction

Joining the construction industry might feel intimidating, but Katie Pickard reassures women that the construction community is welcoming:

“Construction is an incredibly welcoming community with a deep tradition of knowledge-sharing and building expertise on the job. With regard to working in a male-dominated space, it’s again, very welcoming. Almost every mentor I have ever had has been a man. Every single one of them pushed hard to see me succeed. Like just about everyone in this industry, they are driven by their love of the build and are thrilled when anyone—woman or man—wants to become a builder, in every sense of that word.”

Whether you’re experienced or just beginning, there are many opportunities to grow.

How AI is Changing the Game

Construction is evolving—not just because more women are joining, but because new AI tools are making work faster and more accurate. AI isn’t replacing people; it’s helping them work smarter. Jen Johnson, Chief Product Officer at ConstructConnect, explains it in an interview titled “AI & Construction: A Beginner’s Guide”:

“Use AI to your advantage. Use it as your secret weapon, a tool in your belt to help you be more productive.”

One great example is Takeoff Boost™. This AI-powered tool automates tasks like takeoff measurements, giving contractors more time to focus on strategy. Monique Young, a general contractor and estimator at One Accord Services LLC, shares how On-Screen Takeoff® and its AI-assisted feature Takeoff Boost improves her work:

“On-Screen Takeoff has allowed me to be competitive and knowledgeable in my trade, and that has been impactful. Takeoff Boost helps me sharpen my pencil—it helps me to be laser-focused."

Building a Brighter Future

AI isn’t just making construction more efficient—it’s opening doors for more women. By automating tedious tasks, tools like Takeoff Boost are making the industry more accessible. And the best part? It is just the beginning. A new generation of tech-savvy workers will be joining the industry in the next few years, ready to embrace AI. That’s why Jen Johnson encourages everyone currently in construction to explore what AI can do:

“Don’t be scared. Instead, embrace the technology. Try something new every week and share your experiences. The best thing you can do is stay curious,” she advises.

Young shares a similar perspective:

“I like AI. I’m not afraid of it. Why would I not use a tool that’s available to me now, just because I am afraid? It helps me. It’s a tool I can use now that helps me with my day-to-day business.”

Pickard emphasizes the importance of inspiring a future generation of women, including those that may be using AI tools in other aspects of their life:

“Awareness is the biggest obstacle. If more women were aware of the opportunities in the construction industry, you would see more women here. I describe my career as the job I never knew I always wanted. If you have a woman in your life—young or old—wondering what their next step is, tell them to consider a career in construction. It could be the thing they never knew they always wanted!”
