Top 10 Construction Industry Podcasts You Need to Check Out

Operating Insights | Construction Fun

It’s safe to say that 2020 has pretty much been a dumpster fire of a year. The coronavirus pandemic and subsequent shelter-in-place and stay-at-home orders and other health precautions has significantly impacted how we work and live. This year I’ve found myself with, not necessarily more free time, but less things to do to occupy that time like going to the movies, traveling, attending sporting events and concerts, and hanging out with friends and family.

In addition to spending more time on some of my favorite hobbies like photography, woodworking, and reading. I’ve also found myself listening to a lot more podcasts this year. For the most part, those podcasts have been my personal interests and hobbies, but I’ve also had the chance to check out some great construction industry podcasts.

I’ve put together a list of the top 10 construction industry podcasts I’ve had the opportunity to check out this year. The criteria for a podcast making it on the list is that it has to be educational, insightful, and, most importantly of all, entertaining. Check them out, download some episodes, and enjoy. (They’re great for getting through your daily commute.)

The AEC Disruptors Podcast

As the name of the show suggests, The AEC Disruptors podcast is dedicated to embracing innovation and change in the AEC industry to help move it forward. Each episode, host Christopher Riddell chats with industry experts on the innovations and technologies shaking the construction industry and how those disruptors creating positive changes to the way we design and build.

Art of Construction Podcast

Launched in 2014 and hosted by Devon Tilly, the Art of Construction podcast covers a wide range of topics with interviews with industry experts and other professionals to help contractors grow and improve their business. The most recent episodes have covered everything from adding a mental health plan to your safety training, tackling supply chain financing, and adopting Microsoft’s Digital Building Lifecycle for data-driven decision making.

Bridging the Gap Podcast

While geared primarily toward the mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP) industry, the Bridging the Gap podcast hosted by Todd Weyandt has something for everyone in the construction industry. Topics covered include construction tech, improving productivity, collaboration, and more. Worth checking out regardless of whether your trade is in MEP or something else.

Building the Future Podcast

So, 2020 hasn’t been all bad. It brought us the launch of the Building the Future podcast hosted by Brett Thorne, Operations Officer at Thorne Lumber Company. The podcast covers topics relevant to both the residential and commercial construction industries including crafting a company culture, technology, improving efficiencies, and personal development and growth.

CONEXPO-CON/AGG Radio Podcast

Hosted by Missy Scherber, the CONEXPO-CON/AGG Radio podcast discusses all things construction with industry experts and business owners. Just like the CONEXPO-CON/AGG trade show, the podcast has a heavy focus on construction equipment and technology.

But with over 100 episodes, the CONEXPO-CON/AGG Radio podcast covers a little bit of everything, including the latest trends shaping the construction industry as well as insights on running and managing a successful construction business.

Construction Brothers Podcast

This is another relatively new, yet highly entertaining construction podcast you need to start listening to and following. The Construction Brothers podcast is hosted by, you guessed it, brothers Eddie and Tyler Campbell who, along with their dad, own ABSI, a building information modeling (BIM) business.

While they do focus on technology and automation in many episodes—they do run a BIM business, after all—I’ve also checked out episodes on RFIs, emotional intelligence, mass timber, and my personal favorite, an interview with Roy Underhill, host of PBS’s Woodwright’s Shop, a show I’ve enjoyed since childhood.

The Construction Leading Edge Podcast

Another well-established podcast, The Construction Leading Edge, hosted by Todd Dawalt, has been churning out great advice and insights since 2014. Topics run the gamut on everything you need to run a profitable construction company and grow your business. Todd’s interviews with subject matter experts and industry professionals make it feel like a master class on how to succeed in construction.

The Construction Record Podcast

Next on our list is a podcast for our neighbors to the north in Canada. The Construction Record is the national construction news podcast for ConstructConnect’s Daily Commercial News and the Journal of Commerce. A rotating stable of cohosts from the JOC and DCN editorial staff bring you that latest industry news and “the stories behind the construction stories” from the Great White North.

ConTechCrew Podcast

Launched in 2016 as the ConTechTrio by JBKnowledge, the ConTechCrew podcast is your one-stop shop for all the latest and greatest construction technology news and trends. Each week, James Benham and his crew geek out over construction tech, and technology in general, as well as interviewing the minds behind the construction technology as well as leaders in the industry leveraging construction tech in the real world to improve their business and move the industry forward.

Where We Belong Podcast

Women of Asphalt’s Where We Belong podcast is dedicated to highlighting women working in the asphalt industry. Each episode they speak with industry leaders to discuss their careers, how they got started in construction, and how they’ve overcome obstacles and challenges to get ahead in a male-dominated industry. Other topics covered include attracting more women to careers in construction and new technologies in the asphalt and road infrastructure industries.
