Cleveland, Ohio Sees Record $3.11 Billion in Commercial Construction Permits in 2024

The City of Cleveland, Ohio, issued a record $3.11 billion of commercial construction permits in 2024.
Cleveland.com reported yesterday that the City of Cleveland issued nearly 15,000 building permits for commercial construction projects last year.

While the number of permits remained consistent with 2023, the significant increase in the dollar value highlights larger-scale projects and investments.

Megaprojects, massive construction ventures valued at $1 billion or more, continue to shape the US construction industry. The $1.1 billion megaproject, the Neurological Institute for Cleveland Clinic, represented a significant portion of the city’s record.

Cleveland celebrated the record. Jeff Epstein, Cleveland’s Chief of Integrated Development, stated that the increased permit activity demonstrates that the city is “open and ready for business.” He emphasized the positive impact of these development projects on local neighborhoods, job creation, and tax revenue that supports essential city services.

Construction projects taking place in Cleveland include the Cleveland Clinic’s Neurological Institute, the expansion of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and the groundbreaking of Case Western Reserve University’s Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering building.

Sally Martin O’Toole, Cleveland’s Director of Building and Housing, said that the city is committed to simplifying the development process, cleveland.com reported. “This was a record year for commercial development in the city, and we anticipate that 2025 will show additional growth,” she added.
