Construction Begins on Massive Temperature-Controlled Facility at Wilmington NC Airport

Frontier Scientific Solutions announced yesterday that it had started construction of a large temperature-controlled life sciences warehouse at Wilmington International Airport in North Carolina.

According to company officials, the facility will be the largest of its kind in North America for temperature-controlled storage and moving medical and pharmaceutical products.

The supply-chain solution provider said in a statement, "The ambitious facility is designed to enhance the efficiency and security of transporting time- and temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical products."

"The Wilmington facility will play a crucial role in establishing a direct global gateway for life sciences, connecting North America and Europe with unprecedented speed and reliability."

The warehouse will have some special features, including:

  • Design as a cGMP facility, it follows strict rules for medical products
  • Designation as a Foreign Trade Zone, it allows easier customs processing
  • Connection directly to the airport runway for fast shipping

Leandro Moreira, the COO of Frontier Scientific Solutions, said the building will help speed up the delivery of important medical supplies to patients.

CGMP refers to the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations enforced by the FDA. CGMP provides for systems that assure proper design, monitoring, and control of manufacturing processes and facilities.

The project is part of a plan to make Wilmington a key location for shipping medical products between North America and Europe. It's expected to boost the local economy and create jobs.

Frontier Scientific's project is an instance of specialized building usage by category in the medical supply chain. It highlights the need for skills in the design, management, and construction of building temperature-controlled facilities and working on specialized airport properties.
