Boulder is set to break ground on the highly anticipated Downtown Boulder Station gate expansion project, an initiative to increase transit service capacity and enhance route efficiency. Boulder city administrators said this week that the $982,000 Colorado project is poised to start construction and be completed by summer 2025.

Project Goals and Key Features

Located along 14th Street between Canyon Boulevard and north of Arapahoe Avenue, the expansion will introduce significant improvements to one of Boulder’s most vital transit hubs. Highlights of the infrastructure project include:

  • Five New Bus Gates to accommodate future transit growth and improve service for current routes.

  • Wider Sidewalks and ADA-accessible upgrades for improved pedestrian safety and ease of movement.

  • Pedestrian Amenities like shelters, trash receptacles, and bike racks for enhanced convenience.

  • New Signage and Aesthetic Upgrades with striping and urban design treatments to improve the station’s look and functionality.

  • Improved Drainage with replacement of drainage inlets and maintenance accessibility.

  • Landscaping Enhancements featuring new tree plantings to replace some removed for the construction.

  • On-Street Parking Elimination in the project area to make way for these essential additions.

The Need for Expansion

The Downtown Boulder Station currently serves over 1,200 daily bus trips and 3,300 passenger boardings, with an estimated 420 passengers boarding buses during peak rush hours. These numbers are forecasted to rise as the city adds new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes connecting Boulder with neighboring areas.

Following the completion of the expansion project, the city plans to implement additional related improvements. These include installing fiber infrastructure to support advanced connectivity and finalizing lane modifications to improve traffic flow and safety.
