NTT Global Data Centers Acquires 173 Acres in Mesa, Az for Expansion

NTT Global Data Centers, part of Japan’s NTT Group, purchased 173 acres in southeast Mesa, Arizona, for $300 million to develop a data center campus, The Arizona Republic reported Friday.

The site, at Pecos and Crismon roads, shown on the map below, was approved by Mesa City Council in August 2024. The data center will feature seven data halls, a warehouse, and a two-story office building.

The project will use a closed-loop water cooling system to minimize water consumption.
Closed-loop cooling sends chilled air directly to specific areas, like individual server racks, instead of cooling the entire server room.

NTT already operates a 240-megawatt data center in Phoenix. It expects to open the first phase of the Mesa campus by November 2028 with up to 360 megawatts.

In a recent data center article, Michael Guckes, Chief Economist at ConstructConnect, said, “The response to the rising demand for electricity is evident in the number of recent power generation project starts with valuations exceeding $1 billion.”

“Notable examples of recent energy megaprojects include a $10 billion wind-power farm off the coast of Virginia and a $4 billion next-generation nuclear power plant in Wyoming, among many others,” Guckes added.

Data center construction has surged. Sebastian Tillet, an economist with ConstructConnect partner Oxford Economics, wrote last year, “The demand for data centers in the United States is rapidly increasing, driven primarily by the continued rise of cloud computing and the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI).”

Mesa, AZ, was also selected for data center construction by Meta, Google, and Amazon.
