In a step forward for Oklahoma City’s sports, the Oklahoma City Council approved Flintco and Mortenson as the construction management team for the new arena that will become the home of the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The partnership marks a milestone in the project, allowing the city, operators, and architects to collaborate closely in preconstruction. The 750,000 square feet arena is expected to cost at least $900 million.

David Todd, arena program manager, highlighted the importance of this collaboration in a press release, saying, “Hiring a construction management team is a major milestone for the new arena project. It will enable the City, operators, and architects to work together with the contractors during design, ensuring a seamless and effective process.”

Flintco’s Dave Kollmann said, “As a century-old company founded in Oklahoma, we are honored to build the new NBA arena with Mortenson. Having built the current arena over 20 years ago, we understand the significance of this project for our city’s future.”

Construction is expected to begin in 2026, following the demolition of Prairie Surf Studios (formerly the location of Cox Convention Center). The project is expected to create hundreds of construction jobs, and boost the local economy.

The arena is expected to be completed by June 2028, with a contractual obligation to open by June 2030. The Thunder will continue to play at Paycom Center until moving into their new home.

Mortenson’s Kevin Dalager said, “This project is a tremendous opportunity to create a landmark venue that will serve as a hub for community engagement and sporting excellence for generations to come.”

Mortenson is a U.S.-based developer, builder, and engineering service provider serving the commercial, institutional, and energy sectors.

Flintco, based in Tulsa, OK, provides a full range of construction services, including preconstruction, construction management, design-build, and project and program management.
