Rebuild of NYC $10 Billion Midtown Bus Terminal Gets Go Ahead

Port Authority NY NJ: “All approvals and permits have now been secured.”

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (Port Authority) has received final approval from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the City of New York to replace the aging Midtown Bus Terminal with a state-of-the-art facility.

A 2.1 million-square-foot main terminal, new ramps to the Lincoln Tunnel, 3.5 acres of public green spaces, and more are planned for the $10 billion project. According to the Port Authority, the megaproject (those $1 billion and over) is expected to create approximately 6,000 construction jobs.

The project development, announced last week, marks a significant step toward modernizing public transportation between New York and New Jersey. The facility design consolidates bus operations, minimizes street congestion, and enhances air quality in the area.

The Port Authority said, “All approvals and permits have now been secured,” effectively announcing a go-ahead for an expected construction start in 2025.

  1. New Main Terminal
  2. Storage and Staging Facility to the west of the Main Terminal
  3. New Ramp Structure
  4. Dyer Ave deck-overs to be converted to 3.5 acres of publicly accessible open space
  5. Private development at two locations

The new terminal is projected to open in phases starting in 2028, with the main facility construction completed by 2032.

The existing terminal, which has been operational since 1950, currently accommodates around 205,000 passengers daily. Revamping the 73-year-old terminal is set to reduce commuting times and improve bus service operating schedules.

"The Midtown Bus Terminal is the central hub for bus travel to and from New York City. Located from 40 to 42 streets, between Eighth and Ninth avenues, the terminal is both the largest bus station in the nation and the busiest in the world."                                          Port Authority NY NJ

Designers incorporated net-zero emissions technology to serve an all-electric bus fleet.

Community input was crucial in shaping the project, with extensive outreach among residents and officials.

The Port Authority slogan captures the expected transformation of the megaproject: “From eyesore to eye-popping. From antiquated to state-of-the-art.”
