The City of San Marcos, California, in the North County region of San Diego County, announced in a statement last week, that it had completed its largest infrastructure construction project which began in 2020.

Following four years of construction and approximately $100 million, city administrators announced the completion of the San Marcos Creek project, which included:

  • Street widening Via Vera Cruz from two to four lanes
  • Two new bridges at Bent Avenue and Via Vera Cruz
  • Restored creek habitat over 1.5 miles, installation of over 105,000 new trees and plants
  • Discovery Street widening from two to four lanes
  • A 1.2-mile loop trail with multiple access points
  • Addition of storm drains for water entering the creek habitat
  • A new city park, Paseo del Arroyo Park, the city’s 16th neighborhood park, with new lighting, playground equipment, and picnic tables

The San Marcos Creek construction project was planned to resolve flooding issues by adding new infrastructure, restoring 1.5 miles of the creek habitat, improving accessibility, and adding new outdoor spaces for the community to gather. San Marcos is around 35 miles north of downtown San Diego.

The infrastructure project also added new bike lanes, sidewalks, and street lighting. Crews are still working on restoring roughly 70 acres around San Marcos Creek, it was reported.

The city’s mayor, Rebecca Jones, said, “This achievement is the result of decades of planning and collaboration with local, state, and federal partners and the San Marcos community.”

Mayor Jones thanked the community for their cooperation and patience during construction, adding the project “will add to the quality of life in the area” for years.

Supervisor Jim Desmond, who was involved in early project planning when he was San Marcos mayor, said, “This project showcases how smart infrastructure investments can transform a community, enhancing flood control, mobility, and public spaces.”

Desmond added that the construction project’s success resulted from years of planning and collaboration “between all levels of government and the community.”

The city updated the community about the construction project through its website, text messaging, and automated telephone messages.

Over the past quarter century, construction projects in the City of San Marcos added 60 miles of trails, 29 new parks, and 11 recreation centers.
