The Atlanta City Council narrowly approved zoning changes Monday for the Amsterdam Walk redevelopment, a retail and entertainment district in Midtown Atlanta.
The decision moves forward one of the most significant mixed-use projects along the 22 miles of BeltLine trails and the 190-acre Piedmont Park greenspace.
The council voted 8-6 to rezone the nearly 11-acre site near Monroe Drive, allowing developer Portman Holdings to build up to 1,100 apartments, 150,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, and public plazas.
The approved plan features shorter buildings, reduced in height from 17 to nine stories from previous renderings. Revised plans also include more residential units than earlier proposals.

Developers made the changes in response to community feedback and negotiations with neighborhood planning committees.

However, some residents remain opposed, citing concerns about increased traffic in an already congested area during construction and after completion.

Documents provided to the council state the rezoning will permit construction of three buildings for commercial use, office space, and 900 multi-family units, with an estimated completion date of 2028, WSBTV reported.

Developers say the plan aligns with conditions negotiated with neighborhood stakeholders, but residents may remain unconvinced.
A timeframe for the construction start has not been released.
