Churchill Downs Racetrack in Kentucky paused a $920 million expansion project last week, the company said in a statement. The company cited rising construction costs linked to new tariffs and ongoing economic uncertainty.
The decision to pause construction impacts planned multi-year projects, including The Skye, Conservatory, and Infield. The projects were expected to add nearly 7,000 seats and transform fan experiences by 2028.

In a statement, Churchill Downs said, “The decision to delay these construction projects is due to the increasing uncertainty surrounding construction costs related to tariff and trade disputes as well as current macro-economic conditions.”
It added that the company will reassess the economic landscape in the coming months before determining when or if the projects will proceed.
The Skye Terrace renovation was set to modernize the last unrenovated luxury suite area, while the infield project aimed to replace temporary suites with permanent, upscale structures.

Despite the pause, Churchill Downs will move forward with two smaller projects. Renovations to the Finish Line Suites and the Mansion, two exclusive areas on the fifth and sixth floors, will proceed at a cost of $25 to $30 million. Completion is targeted for April 2026.
CEO Bill Carstanjen acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, saying, “We do not want to disappoint our fans. However, we have a responsibility to be disciplined given the recent changes in the economic environment. We remain committed to growing our iconic flagship asset over the long term."

The 151st Kentucky Derby takes place on May 3, 2025.
